Free Desktop Apps That Feel Paid

Free desktop software that replaces expensive paid tools: video, design, photo, audio, office and CAD, with each one's real limits noted.

Everything here is free, permanently, and would have cost real money not long ago, in several cases it literally did. The test was that the free version is the whole product, not a stripped tier designed to sell you the real one. Trials, watermarked exports and feature-locked demos didn't get in.

These are downloads, which is the one thing separating this list from its companion, Free Tools That Feel Paid, the same idea for things that run in a browser tab. If you want to try something in the next thirty seconds, start there. If you want software you'll still be using in five years, start here.

The catches are worth knowing and are in the notes. A few are the learning curve rather than the price: Blender, darktable and FreeCAD are all genuinely hard, and nobody is doing you a favour by pretending otherwise. Some have a paid tier that's real but narrow, Resolve's Studio licence, Zotero's storage, and the notes say what it actually unlocks. Affinity, is free because Canva bought it and changed the model, which is worth knowing since that's a decision that could be revisited.

Good starting point if you need the basics and don't want to spend any money, you're setting up a new machine, if a subscription just renewed and you're wondering whether it needed to, or if you're a student or hobbyist who never had the budget in the first place.
I use Audacity, Affinity, and Da Vinci Resolve almost daily, and OBS quite a lot.

  1. DaVinci Resolve - Blackmagic Design blackmagicdesign.com The one that makes the whole list make sense: a true video editing application with color-grading and editing suite used on studio features, free with almost nothing held back. This is the heaviest download here
  2. Affinity by Canva - Free Creative Suite affinity.studio Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign equivalents merged into one app, free since Canva relaunched it in October 2025. Needs a free Canva account to activate; the AI features are the only thing behind a paywall. Formerly a paid one-off purchase, so the free tier is the whole former product.
  3. Blender - Free 3D Creation Suite blender.org 3D modelling, sculpting, animation, simulation and a full video sequencer, with no paid tier at all. Genuinely industry-standard now. The learning curve is the real cost.
  4. OBS Studio - Free Streaming and Recording obsproject.com The default for streaming and screen recording, free and open source, with no watermark, no time limit or resolution cap. Scene-based setup takes an evening to learn and then never gets in your way.
  5. GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program gimp.org The long-running Photoshop alternative. Version 3.0 finally brought non-destructive editing and a much better interface, which answered the main complaint people had for two decades.
  6. Krita - Free Digital Painting Software krita.org Built for painting and illustration rather than photo retouching - brush engine first, and better at that than Photoshop. Don't reach for it to edit a photograph.
  7. Inkscape - Free Vector Graphics Editor inkscape.org Vector illustration with a proper node editor, SVG-native so files stay portable. Slower than Illustrator on very complex documents, fine for everything else.
  8. darktable - Open Source Photography Workflow darktable.org RAW developing and photo cataloging, closest free thing to Lightroom. Non-destructive throughout. The module-based interface takes real effort to learn.
  9. Kdenlive - Free Video Editor kdenlive.org A straightforward multi-track video editor for when Resolve is more than the job needs. Free, open source, no export limits or watermarks.
  10. HandBrake - Open Source Video Transcoder handbrake.fr Converts video between formats and shrinks file sizes without visible quality loss. Unglamorous and the thing you end up using constantly.
  11. Audacity - Free Audio Editor and Recorder audacityteam.org Multi-track audio recording and editing that's been the free default for twenty years. Telemetry was added under new ownership in 2021 and is opt-in, forks like Tenacity exist
  12. LibreOffice - Free Office Suite libreoffice.org Word, Excel and PowerPoint equivalents, fully offline, no account. Reads and writes Microsoft formats. It's fine for ordinary documents and imperfect on heavily formatted ones.
  13. Godot Engine - Free Game Engine godotengine.org A full 2D and 3D game engine with no royalties and no revenue threshold, ever, which became a much bigger selling point after Unity's 2023 pricing episode. MIT licensed.
  14. FreeCAD - Open Source Parametric 3D CAD freecad.org Parametric 3D CAD for mechanical design and 3D printing, against paid tools costing thousands a year. The 1.0 release in late 2024 fixed the long-standing topological naming problem that made earlier versions frustrating.
  15. Zotero - Free Reference Manager zotero.org Collects references, PDFs and citations and formats bibliographies in any style, with Word and LibreOffice plugins. Free with 300MB of sync storage; more storage is the only paid part.
