Free Tools That Feel Paid

Browser tools and asset libraries whose free tiers are good enough that you'd expect to pay, with an honest note on each one's limits.

16 sites Updated Curated by Guy Malachi

The test for this list is that the free tier is the product, not a trial. No countdown, no three-exports-then-pay, no watermark stamped across the thing you just made. If the free version exists to make you want the paid version, it didn't get in.

They open in a tab and work. A few are asset libraries rather than tools, which earns them a place for the same reason: what they give away free is what other services charge for. The rule does rule out some genuinely great free software, DaVinci Resolve, Affinity, Blender, which live on a separate list because a link to a download page isn't the same as a link to a working tool.

Every one of these has a catch somewhere, and the notes say what it is: ads, an optional account, a resolution ceiling, a paid tier for teams. That's the honest trade for software this good costing nothing, and knowing which catch you're accepting is most of the value here. Where the catch is bad enough to matter, remove.bg's free download is a 0.25-megapixel preview, the note says so plainly rather than pretending it doesn't.

Useful if you need to do one thing properly and don't want a subscription for it.

  1. Photopea - Online Photo Editor photopea.com Photoshop in a browser tab, and not a watered-down version of it. Layers, masks, smart objects, and it opens PSD, AI, Sketch and XD files. Ad-supported, no account. The single most surprising thing on this list.
  2. TinyWow - Free File Tools tinywow.com Around 200 file utilities in one place: PDF splitting and merging, conversions, image and video tools. Free and ad-supported, no account, uploads are cleared after a short window.
  3. Excalidraw - Whiteboard & Diagrams excalidraw.com A whiteboard with a deliberately hand-drawn look, which turns out to be the right style for thinking out loud. Runs locally, no account, and live collaboration is free.
  4. remove.bg - Remove Image Backgrounds remove.bg Still the best cutout quality, especially on hair, but the free download is capped at roughly 0.25 megapixels, so it's a preview. Full resolution costs credits. Fine for a quick check, wrong for anything you'll ship.
  5. PDF24 Tools tools.pdf24.org The PDF suite that doesn't nag: merge, split, sign, OCR, compress, convert. No watermarks, no account, no page limits. There's a free desktop version too if you'd rather not upload.
  6. Squoosh - Compress Images squoosh.app Google's image compressor, with a slider that shows before and after side by side. Everything runs in the browser, your images never leave the machine.
  7. Penpot - Full stack design penpot.app Open-source design and prototyping, close enough to Figma to switch. Free for unlimited users and files, and self-hostable if you'd rather own it. Paid tiers exist but are aimed at large organizations.
  8. Namelix - Business Name Generator namelix.com Generates business names from a keyword and filters them by style and length, with logo mockups alongside. Names are free, buying a logo file is the upsell.
  9. unDraw - Free Open-Source Illustrations undraw.co Open-source illustrations you recolour to your brand before downloading. MIT-style licence, no attribution needed, commercial use fine. The terms are more permissive than most paid libraries.

  11. Clipchamp - Free Online Video Editor clipchamp.com Microsoft's browser video editor: unlimited 1080p exports with no watermark, which almost no free editor offers. 4K needs Premium, and using any premium stock asset blocks export until you upgrade. Microsoft account required.
  12. Coolors - Color Palette Generator coolors.co Generate palettes with the spacebar, lock the colours you like, keep going. Free and ad-supported; the paid tier is for saving unlimited palettes and bulk exports.
  13. SVG Repo - Free SVG Vectors and Icons svgrepo.com Several hundred thousand SVG icons and vectors, searchable and editable in the browser. Licenses vary per icon and are shown on each page, so check before commercial use.
  14. Pexels - Free Stock Photos and Videos pexels.com Free photos and video clips under a licence that permits commercial use with no attribution. The video library is what sets it apart from the other stock sites here.
  15. Unsplash - Free High-Resolution Photos unsplash.com High-resolution photography with a strong editorial eye , the pick when you want an image that doesn't look like stock. Owned by Getty since 2021, the free license has stayed in place.
  16. Pixabay - Free Images, Videos and Music pixabay.com The widest net of the free libraries: photos, video, vectors, illustrations, music and sound effects in one place, no attribution required. Contributor uploads aren't rights-verified, so check anything featuring a recognizable person, logo or building before commercial use.
